Talking Ceramics I

By 10-12-2016

A book that you must bake in the oven. This how the designers of Trapped in Suburbia celebrate the rich history and relocation of the European Centre of Ceramics in Den Bosch (The Netherlands).

Clay’s natural qualities can only be controlled to a certain extent. Artists may spend weeks preparing a ceramic object, yet when it goes into the kiln they give up control. Even the most experienced specialists can find disaster after firing. This book captures the excitement, anxiety and surprise of this part of the process.

The readers must bake the blank book in an oven until it transforms to black, revealing the cover design. The special edition has a front cover made from 1-mm thick porcelain, embodying the fragility of the material and the acceptance of inevitable mistakes.

The EKWC has been a prominent centre for experimentation with ceramics for almost 50 years and boasts a vast array of previous artists-in-residence. This book discusses the experiences, and most importantly mistakes, these artists have encountered during their time there.
