Tapijn I – Maastricht University

By 23-03-2020

Tapijn phase I is part of the transformation of the Tapijn barracks. The former barracks site, built between 1916-1919, will get a new relocation. A lively city park with comfortable educational buildings and catering facilities. Residents, tourists, students and employees: everyone is welcome. LIAG is as lead architect of the total engineering team responsible for the transformation of the existing barracks into a healthy educational environment. This with extra attention to the (State) monumental values and the historical context.

Tapijn I consists of three characteristic pavilion buildings around the former roll call place. LIAG has connected the buildings below ground level with a new plinth. By ‘sliding’ the building part as a basement under the park, the site is given a maximum surface area for a new public park. The typical pavilion structure remains as it is and the historic buildings are individually recognizable yet functionally connected to each other. This clever design also maintains the views between the pavilion buildings.

Tapijn I is designed in a team consisting of: LIAG architects and building consultants, Restoration architect Jelle de Boer, Landscape architects BoschSlabbers, Construction consultancy Van der Ven (consultant constructions), Consultancy installations VIAC and Arcadis ((guidance Well certification).
