The Bugesera Collection
Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) is a new university in Bugesera, Rwanda that was founded to educate the next generation of leaders in conservation agriculture, with the ultimate aim of establishing healthy and sustainable food independence in the country.
Over the past two years, MASS Design Group designed and built the RICA campus. MASS enlisted Super Local to collaborate on the design and production of over 75 different furniture and interior products.
Super Local created a network of over 85 local manufacturers, craft centres, and individual entrepreneurs in Rwanda. MASS and Super Local sought to highlight local innovation and ideas and hire local labour, while limiting carbon emissions and minimizing the reliance on imported materials and products. The resulting product designs honour and elevate traditional Rwandan craft, while meeting the specific needs of campus users.
The Bugesera Collection shows what sustainable development could look like and challenges the design industry to be more intentional about the processes of making and to radically reduce the embodied carbon tied to the built environment.
