The Far Side

By 05-09-2020

Her fascination with the infinite universe and everything that shines, floats, rotates and hangs in it has a firm place in Jantje Fleischhut’s artistic work. The concealed information on the back of the moon inspired her new jewellery collection ‘The Far Side’. The 5° inclined lunar orbit and its elliptical shape leave 41 percent of the moon’s surface hidden from the earth.

On October 7, 1959, the Russian probe Luna 3 took the first photos from the back of the moon. The recording was spectacular, the resolution poor. Jantje Fleischhut’s imagination and illusion start here, with a 41% shadowy performance. The result are clear and very fine constellations in a variety of elements that meet in different settings. The wearer finally determines their position; thus, the image of the back of the moon remains in motion.

Jantje Fleischhut has been working in the design department at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences since 2016, where she is head of the bachelor’s and master’s degree in New Craft Object Design. Before that, she taught at the jewellery department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam as well as at the product department of the Royal Academy in The Hague, in addition to running her own studio as an independent jewellery designer.

After completing a classic training as a goldsmith and working experience in a Hamburg design studio, she completed her bachelor’s degree at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, followed by a master’s degree at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.
