Theo van Hoytema retrospective

By 30-12-2017

On November 4, the Dutch Museum of Lithography put The Hague artist Theo van Hoytema in the spotlights with a retrospective of his lithographic work. Theo van Hoytema died one hundred years ago, on August 28, 1917. He has become especially famous for his colorful calendars and detailed fairy tale books, but in fact all his graphic work is of a very high level. His free prints are still considered the very best lithographs ever made in our country. For the Dutch Museum of Lithography this was reason enough to dedicate an exhibition to the oeuvre of this unique Dutch artist.

Art Nouveau
With his work Theo van Hoytema is classified among the Art Nouveau artists. He was a versatile artist whose main focus was on the plant and animal world. This is where he drew his inspiration from. With his folder ‘Animal Studies’ Van Hoytema achieved an absolute peak in 1898. Top pieces from this folder are the lithographs ‘Angorakonijnen’ (Angora rabbits) and ‘Zilverreigers’ (Egrets) in which he applied embossed printing to highlight the fur and feathers. This is a very complex technique whereby a structure is pressed into the paper.

Dutch Museum of Lithograpy
The Dutch Museum of Lithography is a unique museum that receives international recognition as the only museum that specializes in lithography. The museum shows how important the role of stone printing and lithography has been for our contemporary visual culture. Alois Senefelder’s invention from 1798 unleashed a revolution in the art of printing. For the first time in history it became possible to widely distribute images. The cities were given color when from the end of the 20th century they were covered with posters and advertising material. Artists soon embraced the technique and brought it to fruition. The Dutch Museum of Lithography keeps this unique craft alive, shows the technique as well as a wealth of art lithographs from the permanent collection and in temporary exhibitions.
