Tilbury Tiles

By 30-05-2018

The aim of this project was to change the way historic coastal landfills are seen by using the material qualities of Plasma Rock as a tool to start mining landfills.

Historic coastal landfill sites are viewed by scientists as ticking time bombs as land is being eroded away and sea levels are rising quickly. We have no idea what is in these landfills and are currently doing nothing to stop them from eroding and eventually leaching into the sea.

Plasma Rock is created during a new process called plasma gasification, which transforms landfill waste into energy with as by-product (slag) Plasma Rock. Working with the new material Plasma Rock resulted in the Tilbury Tiles. These black gray tiles enable the material to show its different textures and qualities. The tiles have an extremely high density, so they don’t get damaged easily.

The vases are made of recycled borosilicate glass mixed with Plasma Rock. The material restricts the glass so it is harder to blow this mix into organic shapes.
