TNO Torwash – Studio Groovido | Heap

By 17-02-2022

Torwash is the name of the technology developed by TNO. With a new application of this technology, you can completely dissolve and break down bioplastics (such as PLA), after which they can be used again. This offers designers opportunities to design composites and composite products that can still be fully recycled. The results can be seen at Yksi Expo.

Toys can really only be thrown away, usually with the unsorted waste that ends up in the incinerator. The design is compact to prevent small parts from breaking or falling off, which the children can put in the mouth or even swallow. Due to the strict requirements – such as possible contamination with bacteria – recycled plastic cannot and may not be used to make new toys.

To show the possibilities of the new Torwash technology, Studio Groovido has designed a toy car. The model is 3D printed and consists of a composite PLA shell that connects several other components. After processing in the Torwash installation, the composite particles such as the glow in the dark can be filtered out. The other components such as the metal wheel axle simply remain intact at the bottom of the liquid solution. The PLA can be easily separated in the form of lactic acid, ready for a new toy production.
