Uit je Hokje

By 04-05-2019

Uit je Hokje is an art installation made by Circus Engelbregt that took place on ‘Roze Zaterdag’ (Pink Saturday), June 23rd 2018, at the Grote Kerkhof in the centre of Deventer. A large three-dimensional maze made from voting booths connected the themes of LGBT-emancipation to the daily practice of decision making.

Visitors pick a piece of fruit at the entrance. Each of these has a color that resembles one of the colors on the rainbow flag. A voting form grants access to six unique voting booths that each hold questions about gender, sexuality and identity. How often do you have doubts? Satisfied or unsatisfied? Against love or in favour of fear? Fuck you or fuck me? At the end of the maze, the visitors give back their fruit at a spot that resembles a peepshow. Through a notch they are able to see the fruit sensually getting washed, then massaged and eventually blended. The visitors would get the freshly pressed juice in a glass with two straws with the purpose of sharing!

The maze facilitated extraordinary encounters, tough decisions, candid conversations, vivid discussions and striking openness.

Uit je Hokje is a project by Circus Engelbregt commissioned by the Municipality of Deventer. Uit je Hokje results from a motion that was passed by the city council, which stated that the LGBT- emancipation should be more present within the city.
