Unusual Volume

By 03-09-2018

Rotterdam-based StudioSpass’ solution for the living room of the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) office in Rotterdam is an abstract yet functional sculptural garden. Entitled ‘Unusual Volume’, the design is part of the Art at Work project, a series of spaces created by various artists in the CIC offices. Studio Spass was asked to design a contemporary interpretation of an urban jungle.

The team has drawn inspiration from landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx’s quote: ‘A garden is a complex of aesthetic and plastic intentions; and the plant is, to a landscape artist, not only a plant – rare, unusual, ordinary or doomed to disappearance – but it is also a color, a shape, a volume or an arabesque in itself.’

The combination of tailored and existing furniture creates intimate spaces, emphasizing the organic shapes of the colorful sculptures mixed with natural plants. A custom-made printed wall carpet reflects the designers’ interpretation of the skyline of a contemporary cityscape.
