Uruzgan’s Legacy

By 17-07-2016

Since 2001, Afghanistan has been subject to the largest reconstruction mission in history. For more than a decade now, the international community has been trying to rebuild the war-devastated country with tens of thousands of reconstruction projects.

Now that these efforts have come to an end and the international community is preparing to leave the country, Specialist Operations has documented the results in the research Uruzgan’s Legacy. What do the reconstruction projects of Task Force Uruzgan look like nowadays? What is the legacy of the schools, roads, mosques, clinics, government buildings, factories, markets, police stations, prisons and airport initiated by the Netherlands? And how do the interventions relate to the unruly Afghan reality?

Many Western projects in Afghanistan have made only a small positive contribution to the reconstruction of the country. Uruzgan’s Legacy analyzes and criticizes the Dutch reconstruction results, but it does more than just reveal shortcomings; it puts forward concrete proposals for improvement.
