Van der Pekbuurt Amsterdam

By 26-05-2023

The renovation of the Van der Pekbuurt by Ibelings van Tilburg architects commissioned by the Ymere Foundation and Dura Vermeer has been awarded the BNA Best Building – Public Prize 2023.

The neighborhood is one of Amsterdam’s first garden villages with its village-like 1920s architecture. Architect Jan Ernst van der Pek designed the urban and architectural layout in 1916. The garden village was built between 1918 and 1926. Defining the streetscape are the red brick walls, the glazed yellow brick bands and the porches that pop out of the facades. The neighborhood is a protected cityscape.

As part of the entire renovation of the Van der Pekbuurt, this phase involved the renovation of seven building blocks consisting of 94 homes, 64 owner-occupied homes commissioned by Dura Vermeer and 30 social housing units commissioned by Ymere.

The homes have been renovated to a high standard, energy efficient (A-label) and technically prepared for Amsterdam’s heat grid. The historic appearance of the homes has been restored. The new wooden window frames are given the original colors from the 1920s: ochre yellow, dark green and reddish brown.

The residential blocks house a wide variety of homes. The outside of the houses have been restored to their former glory and modernized inside, the layouts are completely new. Only load-bearing building walls and stairs have been retained as much as possible. The homes have been future-proofed with modern layouts with a more spacious bathroom and good kitchen.
