VisKringloop Wieringermeer

By 10-10-2022

Every year, Dutch Design Awards (DDA) honours the best Dutch designers and their most impressive and groundbreaking projects. Various disciplines, viewpoints and solutions are judged in light of the impact they have on our society. Dutch Design Awards thereby gives a boost to the profession as a whole. The best Dutch design, viewed in perspective and placed on a pedestal.

DDA nomination 2022 | Habitat
The VisKringloop in the Wieringermeer polder is a spawning and breeding ground for fish. Clear and large-scale circles provide space for water, grass dikes, reeds and a range of (underwater) vegetation. The variation in water depths, current directions and orientation to the sun create a unique habitat for fish with various places to spawn and shelter. Innovative fish flows create an ecological connection between the Amstelmeer canal / IJsselmeer and the polder water. A new forest edge creates an ecological transition to the Robbenoord wood. The design was established in close collaboration between landscape architect, artist and ecologist. The viewing tower offers visitors a good view of the expressive shapes and sightlines in this artificial landscape, as well as the rich ecology of the area.

Expert jury
Ecology, landscaping and architecture are beautifully intertwined in this textbook example of an artificial landscape. The intervention in the landscape is all about creating better living conditions for wildlife. The VisKringloop tells a clear story; visitors are seduced by the shapes and learn to understand the natural processes. As a client, the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorder Kwartier attaches as much value to ecology as to art and the aesthetic quality of the landscape. This creates added value for the landscape and nature. With the VisKringloop, HOSPER & co use spatial design in a well-dosed and intelligent way, creating a place that is functional, eye-catching and narrative.
