Washed ashore

By 06-11-2020

The monumental Kunstgemaal in Bronkhorst on the IJssel, with the surrounding floodplains, the dike, and De Veluwe, inspired designer Marc de Groot to curate an exhibition entitled Washed Ashore.

A group of seven designers and artists: Jasper Udink ten Cate, Pepe Heykoop, Nienke Hoogvliet, Kranen/Gille, Aliki van der Kruijs, Studio Makkink & Bey and Marc de Groot himself, washed ashore here. In the landscape, some designers show existing, mostly hand-made designs, others made new work especially for the exhibition. They all take nature as a starting point, reflecting on climate change, sea level rise, the changing landscape as well as these changing, turbulent times.

Washed ashore can be seen in the café and gallery of Het Kunstgemaal, the municipal monument of which Joost Wolters is the director. His grandfather was an administrator who at the time passed on the water levels daily to the Water Board. Joost has ensured that the caretaker’s house has been saved from demolition; he now makes the gallery and the café available to show the special washed-up and jutted treasures of the designers with a view overlooking the grass, the trees, the floodplains and the IJssel.

During the exhibition, Jasper Udink ten Cate organized special hyper-local lunches with apples from the nearby orchard, combined with special washed-up stories by the exhibiting designers.
