WDCD LIVE – Marwa Al-Sabouni

By 24-05-2022

Ahead of What Design Can Do Festival, on June 3 in Amsterdam, we introduce some of the speakers. Today we present architect Marwa Al-Sabouni.

Dr. Marwa Al-Sabouni is an award-winning architect, urban thinker, author, and an international speaker from Syria. In 2018, she received the Prince Claus Award at the royal palace of Amsterdam for her critical reflections in her autobiography ‘The Battle for Home: The Vision of a Young Architect in Syria’ (2016). Al-Sabouni analyses how architecture and urban planning have played a role in fuelling violence and civil conflict by disrupting community relations and fragmenting societies.

Al-Sabouni is one of the featured speakers at this year’s What Design Can Do Festival in Amsterdam where she will be exploring how urban design ‘plays a key role in whether a community crumbles or comes together’. Based on her experience of living and working in the war-torn city of Homs, her presentation will also highlight how political and economic forces are incarnated in our buildings.
