Whatever the Weather

By 18-12-2020

Meeting in book form with ‘Whatever the Weather’

‘How can I make quietness and space visible?’ was the question that in 2012 made artist Bruno van den Elshout (The Hague, 1979) to photograph the North Sea horizon every hour for a whole year. Two years later, it produced the extensive book NEW HORIZONS.

Together with designer Sybren Kuiper and bookbinder Wytze Fopma, Bruno is by now preparing a new book edition. The horizon is now no longer the subject, but the background for 144 encounters invited by the artist in 2018. ‘Whatever the Weather’ shows 144 portraits of the same number of people who participated in the project by each sharing a day with Bruno at the Zuiderstrand of The Hague, and portraying themselves at the end of that day. At eye level, without visible clothing or attributes, and during the weather conditions of the moment.

The question ‘How do I invite people to a meaningful encounter?’ was the starting point for the project, and it was also the guiding principle for the choices from which the book design originated. The 144 faces are all shown in the book at full size. Thanks to the standing book construction, as a ‘reader’, you automatically get on the same height with the person portrayed, which makes it really feel as if you are sitting opposite someone. This creates a new encounter whenever a page is turned.

The book is going to be produced in print as soon as there are sufficient preorders. Meanwhile the book has been subscribed to for more than €15,000. Pre-order the book > www.whatevertheweather.nl/order
