Willem II Passage, Spoorzone Tilburg

By 10-04-2017

Willem II-passage (Tilburg, NL) wins iF DESIGN AWARD 2017 for architecture

CIVIC architects and Bright, members of The Cloud Collective, designed the award winning Willem II-passage. The passage consists of a sequence of urban spaces which seamlessly tie together city, the transport hub of the central station and vacant industrial heritage. Significant element within the route is the pedestrian and cyclist underpass to link the historic city center with the to-be-developed former railway workshop.

The perception of safety is an important part of the concept, however, by refraining from the use of conventional safety devices. In close cooperation with Van Tetterode Glass Studio en Philips Lighting a refined but robust luminous glass brick was developed and prototyped. The structure also offers possibilities for use of scent and sound, without its technology becoming intrusive.

Approximately 30,000 built in LEDs create a stunning effect. A unique algorithm means the dynamic light effect is responsive to the time of the day, weather and even movement of people as they travel. Never repeating, never boring but always relevant, this innovative use of generative content instead of pre-programmed light is an iconic addition to the Tilburg architectural landscape.
