‘Wind Knitting Factory’ during the Traditional Costume Festival

By 09-09-2019

On 28 and 29 September 2019 the Wind Knitting Factory of Merel Karhof will operate in the decor of the beautiful Buitenmuseum of the ZuiderzeeMuseum in Enkhuizen.

The Wind Knitting Factory is a wind-powered knitting machine that is attached to the façade of a building or placed in a meadow. The wings cover more than a meter in diameter and the wind that this mill catches powers the knitting machine. This is how a long scarf is knitted. When there is much wind, the machine knits quickly and if the wind is not so strong the machine knits more slowly. Every now and then the knitted fabric is ‘harvested’. The scarves are made of 100% wool, which after having been harvested is turned into felt and then labelled with the time and day when the wind created the knitted product.

This summer photographer Charlotte Visser followed wind-designer Merel Karhof on the way to a meadow and documented the construction of the ‘Wind Knitting Factory’. This resulted in a marvellous photo series and a dozen new wind-knitted scarves. These exclusive scarves will be on sale during the Klederdrachtfestival. Merel Karhof will be present with her ‘Wind Knitting Factory’ to demonstrate how the scarves are made.
