Writing Designers Grab the Stage

By 02-03-2019

Report by Bianca Spierenburg

Storytelling is a theme that you can’t stop talking about. On Thursday 14 February, chairman of the day Lucas Verweij established the link between the speakers and the audience. Five writing designers presented a text the personal interpretation of which was later criticized and applauded by artist Mieke Gerritsen, artistic director Anke Bangma and the audience present.

As a stand-in for Joeri Pruys, Jeroen Deckers started the evening with a story by Pruys about the famous architect lamp. A tribute to sellers who are so clever in finding these kinds of value-adding descriptions of ordinary objects.

According to advertiser Daan Kemp, stories contribute to the question whether it is true that you can sell anything as long as it is in the right packaging. Is a product by definition a good product because it comes with a good story? His story brought food for thought to our role as (future) owner of the product.

ScenographerAnne Karin states that theater is a primal form of Storytelling in which the story is first of all a survival kit, perhaps stripped of pure success. As a matter of fact, success stories are simply not for the taking. The reflections of Mieke Gerritsen and Anke Bangma about the subject appeal to the imagination. While Mieke felt the need to tell more stories, Anke’s reaction was that this primal form also plays a large role among young people. The ‘I hear you’ of real and authentic stories evokes a warm feeling and also leaves room for new interpretations.

“How many constructions will we devise to fool ourselves in such an entertaining way?” A crazy question that Stadsdramaturg (City Dramatist) Hajo Doorn asked the audience at the end of his speech. Similar to the way in which the legendary Rotterdam punk formation De Rondos used to live in the late ‘70s, this lifestyle now seems to be mainstream, dominant and also hip. In the future you will have to pay for something you do not want. An insane idea which occupies all  our minds.

Artist Tinkebell visited Fukushimaseveral times. She said that in that place so far no people have died from radiation, but rather from anxiety and stress. Credible? Leaving us disillusioned; asking questions and forming an opinion.

Authenticity and truth-finding, through a glimpse into the narrator’s perception of his/her environment. You would have liked to be there.
