40 years Galerie Ra
Galerie Ra, gallery for contemporary jewelry in Amsterdam, has been in existence for 40 years now and celebrates this event with the publication of the book 40 jaar Galerie Ra Dierbaar. The book presentation will take place on Saturday, 15 October. The exhibition 40 jaar Galerie Ra will be on show at the Sieraad jewelry fair, from 10 to 13 November in the Gashouder in Amsterdam
Galerie Ra was founded by jewelry designer Paul Derrez in October 1976. He made his Studio on the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat 178 suitable for an exhibition space and decided to give the gallery priority over his work as a designer. At first, the gallery showed mainly works made of materials such as plastic, textile and aluminum. Jewelry of precious metals were considered too conservative and elitist. In 1983 the gallery moved to a prominent location on Vijzelstraat 80. In 2010 Ra moved to the Nes, in the so-called Sieradenkwartier (Jewelry Quarter).
The book 40 jaar Galerie Ra Dierbaar contains the history of the gallery described by gallery owner Paul Derrez and is illustrated with printed material produced by the gallery. The book is interspersed with short stories from customers about a precious piece of jewelry or object which they once bought at Galerie Ra. A complete exhibition list gives an overview of all gallery activities of the last 40 years, illustrated with historical photographs.
The exhibition 40 years Galerie Ra comprises a selection of pieces of jewelry from the collection of Paul Derrez/Willem Hoogstede, which had been shown at Galerie Ra in the past 40 years.
The exhibition Ra Now shows new work from the 60 artists who are currently represented by Galerie Ra. It is still on view until 10 December 2016 in Gallery Ra, Nes 120 in Amsterdam.
