Safari Typo Amsterdam

By 12-01-2017

In subway stations, shopping streets and residential areas, on billboards, letters are everywhere. These letters define the cityscape as much as architecture or fashion. How does the typography in Barcelona differ from that of Montreal? Why does unorthodox geometrical and decorative display type fit in Amsterdam?

In eight short films, entitled ‘Safari Typo’, French documentary filmmaker Thomas Sipp looks at typography in different cities. A few days after the premiere on French TV channel ARTE, a selection of the documentaries is screened in Amsterdam. The director will be present to give an explanation.

Nearly 40 years ago graphic designer Piet Schreuders undertook a similar expedition. He made a portrait of Los Angeles based on the letters in the city. Fragments from his documentary ‘Hollywood At Last!’ will be shown and Schreuders, also protagonist in the Safari Typo documentaries, will show how LA has changed since 1979.

Letter designer Bas Jacobs (Underware) made a typographical tourist guide for Amsterdam following the documentary by Thomas Sipp.
