De Bijenkorf – The Magician

By 27-03-2016

In December 2015, Random Studio gave the shop windows of three branches of Dutch department store De Bijenkorf a magic touch to celebrate the festive season.

Random’s installation centered around a series of three magic tricks conducted by a bodiless, two-faced magician, whose gloved hands hovered in mid-air. These kinetically animated appendages brought to life the surrounding pieces: a gift box that hid and revealed precious presents, a magically spinning whirlwind string and a billowing over-sized silk scarf, suspended in mid-air in a poetic dance.

For the luxury department store’s auxiliary branches in Rotterdam and The Hague the magician’s trick repertoire consisted simply of the majestic scarf. At the flagship store in Amsterdam, the spacious (and famous) corner window showcased all three distinctive tricks. A newly developed sequencing program ensured that the performance never repeated itself.

Special attention was given to the embroidered leather-goods, a job Random commissioned to Parisian fashion artist Natalie Riachi. Random’s 3D-printed masks and gloves were upholstered in lambskin. Then, 115 Swarovski crystals and approximately 600 brilliantly faceted shiny filler beads were sown onto every glove.
