The Last Book

By 13-12-2014

Due to digitalization the paper books needs to make space for the digital e-reader. Dutch photographer Reinier Gerritsen made documentary portraits that point at this social, economical and cultural shift.

The result is the unique combination of the paper book ‘The Last Book’ and the digital app ‘The Last Book Revisited’. While the paper book has photographs of readers with paper books, ‘The Last Book Revisited’ has images that depict people who make use of e-readers and smartphones.

Reinier Gerritsen has been photographing in the public sphere for over twenty years. Fascinated by the phenomenon of people reading on commuter trains, Gerritsen worked in the confined space of the subway of New York.

Exhibition ‘The Last Book’, Julie Saul Gallery, 535 West 22nd Street, New York.
