3D Printed Buttons

By 12-07-2015

The 3D printed buttons project is a collaboration between product designers Leoni Werle and Femke Roefs.

Femke: “It fascinated us that it is so nice to watch while a 3D printer is printing. We both love the lines the printer makes, it’s like drawing. Layer upon layer. We wanted to use these qualities in our design. The spirograph was our inspiration.”

“Altough the material is very strong, it looks fragile and reminds us of lace. We designed the shapes in a 3D drawing program. Another program converts the drawings to G-codes that are then fed into the 3D printer. The design is printed in layers including every detail.”

The 3D printed buttons are made of PLA (polylactic acid), a thermoplastic aliphatic polymer derived from renewable resources such as cornstarch or sugarcane.
