Aatjan Renders

By 06-11-2015

The Amsterdam-based photographer Aatjan Renders works on commission but he also makes free work. He prefers photographing people.

Faces
The series Faces consists of four portraits in black and white and won bronze in the category Portraiture – Personality at the Prix de la Photographie Paris (Px3).

Masks
Aatjan: “Confusion was the starting point when making this series. The gigantic amount of external influences – social media for example, and the news that keeps flooding in – gives you the feeling that you’re always lagging behind the facts. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to process this endless flow of impulses and what we want is to distance ourselves from it.”

Potamides
Aatjan: “The third series is a series of underwater portraits. Hanging upside down in a small aquarium, with water in my nose and such, I was sure the portraits would turn out rather unsettled. Nevertheless, the series exudes tranquility. Hair dancing in the water, the gaze of the models looking at nothing – it remains fascinating.”
