Alice in Wonderland

By 11-05-2015

The summer of 2015 will mark the 150th anniversary of Lewis Caroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. Dutch publishing group Gottmer celebrates this occasion by publishing a special new edition of this classic book and its sequel, ‘Through the Looking-Glass’, combined in one band, with brand-new illustrations by Floor Rieder.

Floor Rieder is well known for her work on the multi-award winning non-fiction book ‘The Mystery of Life’. With her distinctive, elaborate and contemporary drawings, Rieder has successfully created a witty and timeless Alice. She used a special technique, close to the scratchboard technique that was highly popular in the 19th century. In this old technique, the illustrations were cut out with a sharp knife in a layer of Chinese clay, which itself was covered in a layer of ink. Floor chose to work with layers of glass in stead of clay, for an even finer result. After cutting the ink, she scanned in the glass layers and colored them in the computer.
