Ambio

By 02-12-2014

Waves lighting up blue in the dark sea water – everyone who has ever experienced this knows how magical it looks. This phenomenon is caused by bioluminescent micro-organisms that light up when each wave provides them with oxygen. Teresa van Dongen’s light installation Ambio balances two weights and a glass tube half-filled with a liquid containing a carefully selected luminescent bacteria taken from the skin of an octopus. Give the lamp a gentle push and the weights will keep it moving. As long as there is movement, there is light.

Lumist
Energy is a precious commodity, but we often don’t notice wasting it. Teresa van Dongen was looking for a way to make use of the heat that is lost during halogen lighting. Her search resulted in Lumist: a lamp and humidifier in one. The heat from the lamp keeps the water just below boiling point, thus causing the water to evaporate. The second reservoir constantly adds water, visualizing the energy that otherwise would have been lost.

The project Ambio, we are looking for sponsors who want to invest in our research on organic light-based bioluminescent microorganisms.
