Catu & Hanoi Fabrics for Imperfect Design

By 08-02-2015

The label Imperfect Design connects Dutch designers to craftspeople in developing countries like Guatemala, Viet Nam and India. Together they develop handmade lifestyle products focused on a Western audience.

Catu Fabrics by Arian Brekveld
Together with Mrs. Coor Thi Nhom and her colleagues, Arian Brekveld designed fabrics that are woven by women of the Catu group in a remote area in Central Viet Nam. By tradition, these women use simple hand looms to weave symbols made of beads into fabrics. Arian was inspired by their enthusiasm and the precision with which they interweave the beads and the yarn. He decided to design fabrics with a simple grid pattern of beads. In a workshop in Hanoi, disabled craftsmen make iPad bags and cushions of the fabrics.

Hanoi Fabrics by Arian Brekveld
Together with Mrs. Phuong and her colleagues, Arian designed plaids and cushions. This group of craftspeople in rural Viet Nam combines embroidery work with life as farmers. Traditionally, they make typically Vietnamese silk bed linen. In the collection Hanoi Fabrics, Arian uses a special combination of materials and colors: warm wool on one and cool silk on the other side. Hand-embroidered stitching patterns and buttons made of left over pieces of horn complete the collection.
