Cheese Maker for Imperfect Design
The label Imperfect Design connects Dutch designers to craftspeople in developing countries like Guatemala, Viet Nam and India. Together they develop handmade lifestyle products focused on a Western audience.
Cheese Maker by Studio Makkink & Bey
For this project, Makkink & Bey chose to work with a small organization in Jaipur that since the 1980s has been devoting itself to children and women from the underprivileged class. The core activity is a craftsmanship school in Jaipur. Jurgen Bey: “In the Netherlands, crafts are disappearing whereas in India there are schools where crafts take center stage.” Setting up a fair-trade unit creates opportunities for the organization to generate income itself.
The Cheese Maker is a collection of products with which one can make homemade cheese. Similarities between The Netherlands and India formed the basis for the design: the tradition of cheese making, historical craft techniques such as ceramics, but also the high population density in both countries resulted in a tradition of stacking houses and items.
The tower consists of a juicer, a milk jug, a spoon, a strainer, a pan, a cutting board, a bowl, a cheesecloth and a press. Each product is hand-made of different materials such as wood, ceramics (blue pottery), metal, copper, cotton, soapstone and marble.
