Combers Cabinet by Kranen /Gille

By 16-04-2015

At the Salone del Mobile in Milan, the Zuiderzee Museum presents as part of Ventura Lambrate the exhibition ‘Combers Cabinet by Kranen /Gille’. Every year, the museum asks artists or designers to provide their current views on the museum’s collection. This year the museum chose Designstudio Kranen /Gille from Den Bosch.

Designer duo Kranen en Gille took the props depot as a starting point. Preservation is a key task for the Zuiderzee Museum; for Kranen / Gille it was the source of inspiration for their Jutterskabinet (Beachcombers’ Cabinet). The duo became fascinated by all sorts of curious objects the backgrounds of which were not supported by a story from the museum’s props depot.

Apart from the stock of historical preserving jars, they also came across a pipe, a syringe, a flask, and a glass eye. Kranen/Gille ‘beach-combed’ nine objects from the depot and gave them a new life. The objects have been gilded and are conserved in a series of lamps.
