Cooking between Volcanoes

By 22-12-2014

‘Koken tussen Vulkanen’ (Cooking between Volcanoes) has recently been declared Cookbook of the Year 2014. The book was written and designed by graphic designer Ko Sliggers.

In ‘Koken tussen Vulkanen’, Ko Sliggers (1952) discusses three thousand years of the culinary culture of southern Italy. The book is a compilation of his contributions to De Avonden, which between 2009 and 2010 were broadcast on VPRO Radio. You can start cooking immediately, because the book contains more than 240 recipes.

Ko: “The recipes are from my own cooking practice on the Aeolian island of Lipari: big wedding parties for the more well-to-do visitors at Filipino’s and the hardcore Italians and Sicilians who had their meals at Sangre Rojo in Quattropani, where I was the chef.”

“I’m convinced that to cook and to eat is to know. The more you know about what you are doing, the more meaningful and the more fun your life becomes. I compiled the book while cooking, designing and writing, selecting and rearranging because in my perception, content and form are immensely intertwined and are constantly questioning one another.”
