Crisis Related Suicides

By 01-06-2015

Richard Sluijs of RichLab in The Hague makes monumental in memoriam for the victims of the global economic crisis.

A protest sign on Wall Street in the autumn of 2008 said “Jump! You Fuckers!”. This was obviously a reference to the supposedly numerous suicides of stockbrokers, bankers and investors after the stock market crash of 1929. The financial world is hugely responsible for the present economic crisis, but the suicides have now been ‘outsourced’ from Wall Street to Main Street. There were thousands of crisis related suicides worldwide.

Based on that knowledge Richard Sluijs made an impressive and unorthodox book on the painful impact of the economic crisis: a collection of stories about people who saw suicide as their only way out. Not only as an in memoriam but also as a critical counterweight to all the statements of politicians, bankers and economists on how the strict austerity policies are now beginning to pay off and soon everything will be back to normal. For life will never be the same for the many families who lost their love.

Richard Sluijs received for his book a Gold Award at the European Design Awards 2015!
