Driving Dutch Design – Studio Bureau

By 16-08-2019

ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curators Marsha Simon (BNO) and Katja Lucas (DDF)

“Studio Bureau is a concept and design agency founded in 2016 by Thijs van Dalen and Frans van Ditzhuijzen. Our work is located at the intersection of graphic design, spatial design and art. As a design duo, we work on visual communication, graphical installations and large-scale interventions with an energizing role.”

“A large-scale intervention initiated on our own initiative is the project ‘Schaalkabaal’. In cooperation with the municipality of Utrecht and ASR Vastgoed, monumental sculptures combined with light and sound came in motion on the largest building site of the Netherlands. This project can be seen as a spectacular form of construction pit tourism and has contributed to the identity of Leidsche Rijn Centrum and to the rapid sale of the first 88 homes.

“An example of visual communication with an activating role is the visual identity that we developed for the 15th ELIA Biennale, which took place in Rotterdam, commissioned by European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA). We developed objects that elicited interaction with the visitor. The objects were used during events such as discussion panels and they connected the visitors on a substantive level with the program.”

“We participate in Driving Dutch Design because we want to professionalize our company further. In the meantime, we have been working fulltime in our design practice for a year and that is why participating in this is the right step at the right time. In particular being able to cooperate with an ABN AMRO coach, in our case this is Petran van Heel, was an important aspect for us to choose this masterclass course. We are looking forward to the Dutch Design Week and the Pitch event.”
