AGORA 2014

By 11-07-2015

The scenography for the exhibition Espace Public at the AGORA architecture biennale 2014 in Bordeaux was developed by Inside Outside (Petra Blaisse) in close collaboration with director Youssef Tohme who wanted to address the influence of culture, economy and politics on public space.

The contrast between the organized, clean and prosperous city of the Western world with its ever-growing plans for building developments and regulations, security and control, and the more flexible, organic and physically active city of the rest of the world, where the un-expected and the un-controllable dominates the inhabitants’ day-to-day lives triggered the idea for a split scenography.

Downstairs the organized, grid city was represented, with its numerous way-finding and behavioral instructions and its system of well-placed objects, its educational texts and explanations. Upstairs the space represented the organic and open urban space, where visitors can move from one place to another naturally, finding their way through instinct and experiencing whatever comes their way, not directed by signage or bothered by regulations or explanations.
