Fish on dry land

By 22-12-2015

Designer Marta Sif Ólafsdóttir wants to tackle migration and unemployment in villages. Therefore she decided to set up the production of her designs in a village to show that it is not just a city thing and that there are actually benefits from producing in a village.

She ended up in the fishing village called Ísafjörður in Iceland because of her personal connection to the area. She researched what kinds of companies and people were there that she could work with and ended up with a metal workshop, a net-knitting factory and an artist.

Marta became intrigued by the boats and fishing gear, which she felt expressed the essence of the town. Taking them out of their marine context and abstracting them, she transformed them into furniture. She sees ‘Fish on dry land’ as an ongoing project. She wants to go to other villages and develop projects based on local stories, knowledge and people.

Marta received the CONNECT(R)ING Award for ‘Fish on dry land’ in 2015.
