ArcheToys

By 13-10-2014

The designs made by Floris Hovers – furniture, lighting and miniatures – surprise the viewer with their disarming simplicity. Hovers got international acclaim with his iconic ArcheToys.

No abstract minimalism, but the end result of a long process of reduction. What remains is the essence – a composition that is almost cartoonish in shape, construction and color. Floris achieves this through an interplay between man and machine. Many of his products reveal a somewhat naive, playful approach. “My designs must be accessible and recognizable.”

Floris founded his own design studio in 2006 and he was awarded the Sanoma Woonaward ‘Jong Talent’ in 2011.  Between 2009-2012, he was also a lecturer at the School of Fine Art and Design AKV | St. Joost (direction spatial design). He also regularly gives lectures and guest lectures in the Netherlands and abroad.

The series ArcheToys is included in the permanent collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and has since 2013 been manufactured under license by design label Magis (Italy).

During the Dutch Design Week Eindhoven (October 18 to 26) the recent work of Floris Hovers can be seen at Yksi Expo.

I will be raffling off an archetoy, a bottle boat, and a CARton-cart among three people who during DDW leave a ‘personal note’ at my presentation spot at YKSI.
