The GEESE.PROJECT

By 01-12-2014

The Netherlands (and other parts of the world) deals with an overpopulation of wild geese. At first the geese came here only to hibernate, but nowadays many of them stay the whole year.

Not much of a problem, you would think. The geese found a place where they feel at home the whole year ’round. Let’s be happy for them! Unfortunately, the geese cause a lot of damage to the agricultural sector, around airports and they disturb the biodiversity. Therefore, the Dutch government has decided to reduce the geese population by 100.000 a year. What will to happen to these geese? Most of them will literally go up in flames.

Vera Knoot: “The GEESE.PROJECT is about changing the perception of an unwanted animal into a usable material. Up until now the most important part of the project has been my investigation towards the production of geese leather. Together with a professional tanner I did a trail-and-error search for the right recipe to make the geese skin into sustainable leather (a kind of leather that’s never been made before).”

The GEESE.PORJECT is the graduation project of Vera Knoot at the HKU University of the Arts, Utrecht.

I’m looking for people who can help me further in optimizing the geese leather and also people who are interested in processing the material into products.
