Grandma’s Pop-up

By 07-08-2015

ONE WEEK ABOUT Experience Design by curators Trapped in Suburbia

There are in the Netherlands more than 1 million people over 55 who are lonely. This number will only increase due to the cuts in health care and the sharp rise in the ageing population. An issue that affects or is going to affect all of us. Take Mark Hendriks for instance, one of the creators of Grandma’s Pop-up. When he returned from holiday, his grandmother confessed to him that she hadn’t spoken to anyone for three days. Her statement moved Mark deeply and that’s why he and 5 of his classmates decided to do something about it.

Grandma’s Pop-up is a pop-up restaurant where they serve old-Dutch dishes prepared by enthusiastic seniors who are still full of life energy and who like to be active in society. They get a cooking course which teaches them to bring solid Dutch cooking back to the modern world. On the menu, for example, are Broad Beans and Peas pâté with a Crispy of Smoked Bacon on Sourdough Bread.

It works both ways. The visitors of the restaurant enjoy a special evening and a delicious 3-course meal for € 12.50. And the cooks are faced with a challenge, have a pleasant evening and the chance to meet new people.

The team is currently working on consolidating the project and converting it into a long-term concept. We think this a very good aim and perhaps it is also the right moment to find out how to strengthen it with branding.
