Jan van Toorn

By 12-10-2014

The theme of the exhibition about communicative designer Jan van Toorn (1932) is the method or ‘strategy’ of visual communication.

The exhibition places Van Toorn’s work against the background of a wide range of design strategies, and shows that in his work gradually a method becomes central that has a specific effect on the eye: the message with a reasoning and a dialogical character.

Also the exhibition itself, designed by Jan van Toorn, has the same intentions: the way of spatial staging aims to activate very different visitors – ranging from a general culturally interested audience to professionals in the design field.

The curators of the exhibition – Diana Franssen and Els Kuijpers – recognize in his work a plea for a social design practice that is rich in counter images and as such is an alternative to the current mostly instrumental practice.

The archive of Jan van Toorn is accommodated in the Special Collections building of Amsterdam University (UVA).

Van Abbemuseum offers
A tour of the exhibition Jan van Toorn by curator Diana Franssen on Wednesday, October 22 at 14.00 hrs. Admission free for Jan van Toorn exhibition. Start Location: Square bookshop Van Abbemuseum.
