ONE WEEK ABOUT Design from Arnhem by Ontwerp Platform Arnhem

Laurens van Wieringen graduated in 2002 from ArtEZ in Arnhem, where he studied Product Design. That same year, he continued his studies at the Royal College of Art in London. Asked about what is was that made the Royal College different from the training in Arnhem, Laurens van Wieringen mentioned two things. While studying in London, he directly carried out commissions for serious, commercial clients. In other words, as a student in London one already played in a different division than in the Netherlands.

Another special experience was getting to know students from other parts of the world. Laurens van Wieringen: “Meeting a Korean or a South American and listening to them telling you what’s going on in their heads is like nothing else you’ve experienced before. You’re confronted with ways of thinking and observing which until then have existed outside your realm of experience. After such experiences you distance yourself from previous axioms and platitudes, like the one about the Dutch directness.” Laurens van Wieringen started his own office in 2013. Together with furniture manufacturer De Vorm and a number of other people, he developed the LJ-Chair, for which felt was used that was derived from PET. “I believe”, says Laurens van Wieringen, “that the era of the individual designer has come to an end; now it is all about bringing people, their goals and their wishes together and start cooperating.”
