Lecture Rob van den Nieuwenhuizen

By 01-02-2016

De Monsterkamer hosts an Open Doors + Special Guest every first Thursday of the month. For the next event on Febrary 4th we invited Rob van den Nieuwenhuizen.

Rob van den Nieuwenhuizen (1980) is a graphic designer and tutor who uses — or abuses — these roles in order to investigate other disciplines. His unquenchable curiosity both in his personal and professional life allows him to collaborate closely with others. Whether it be a book, magazine, visual identity, campaign, exhibition, workshop or record sleeve, his focus is always on editing and on typography. He has been doing this since 2008 under the name DRAWSWORDS.

On the 4th of February he will discuss a few projects and refer to the influence and importance that the Purdie shuffle, daily phone calls, Zorro, being a teacher, hardcore punk, Reid Miles, dinosaurs, 80’s sci-fi and being overenthusiastic have on his work. Furthermore, he will think aloud about how his curiosity and restlessness can make it harder to for him to concentrate, but might actually be his focus.

After graduating as a copy writer and creative strategist from the Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven and studying Media and Culture at the University of Amsterdam, he finished his studies in Graphic Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2008.

So far, he has worked for clients such as Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, STEIM, Converse, KIT Publishers, Fontanel, The Tropenmuseum, Cult Dealer Enzo, Uitgeverij Waanders, Onomatopee, CityHub, the Royal Academy of Art, the Dutch Design Awards, different bands, artists and more. Besides this he co-founded Almanak — the collective that was responsible for designing Items magazine in its last year — and DepotBG, a do-it-yourself project space below his previous studio.

What has proved to become an integral part of his practice is his teaching position at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. This enthusiasm to teach has also led him to give workshops and lectures at the OTIS College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, Pratt Institute in New York and Sint Lucas academy in Antwerpen.
