Miito

By 03-02-2015

Two designers who recently graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven came up with the concept for a less wasteful, easy-to-use water-heater called Miito. It uses induction technology, which is basically the wireless transfer of energy.

The majority of electric kettles is extremely wasteful. The minimum fill line is at approximately 500 ml. This means that if you want one cup of tea (250 ml) you will waste 50% of the hot water and therefore 50% of the energy. As Leyla Acaroglu (sustainability provocateur) said in her TED presentation: “One day of extra energy use [from overfilling electric kettles] is enough to light all the streetlights in England for a night.”

Miito heats the water (or another liquid) directly in the vessel to be used, hence eliminating the heating of excess water. You can fill your cup with water, place it onto the induction base and immerse the rod in the water. The induction base heats the rod, which then heats the water surrounding it.

Miito was shortlisted for the James Dyson Award 2014. The product is still under development. Nils Chudy (Germany) and Jasmina Grase (Latvia) are based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
