Open – A Bakema Celebration

By 25-12-2014

Architect Jaap Bakema was the center of attention at the Dutch Pavilion during the International Architecture Biennale of Venice in 2014. The entry “Open – A Bakema Celebration” offered critical reflections on the idea of the open society based on Bakema’s work and research.

The changing relationships between government and market, architect and citizen were explored in an installation with historical letters, photography, drawings, TV clips, films and interviews. There was also a ‘Post Box for the Open Society’, an online platform for architects and designers to exchange new ideas for the open society.

The curators were Guus Beumer and Dirk van den Heuvel. Guus Beumer is Director of Het Nieuwe Instituut. Dirk van den Heuvel is senior lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture of the Delft University of Technology and is head of the Jacob Bakema Study Centre. Design studio Experimental Jetset was responsible for the spatial and graphic design of the exhibition and Johannes Schwartz for a photographic essay on the work of Bakema.
