Paul Mijksenaar Award 2015

By 13-11-2015

The Paul Mijksenaar Design for Function Award, a prize for functional design, was awarded for the first time in 2011. In 2015 it has been awarded to Ikea for their instruction manuals. The award ceremony took place on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 in Amsterdam.

Paul Mijksenaar: “Ikea has managed to create an unparalleled, consistent and beautifully executed oeuvre. For over 30 years, this oeuvre has proved to be highly recognizable as well as exceptionally effective. A striking feature is the inventiveness with which many problems have been solved. In fact, these instruction manuals are assembly manuals. Once the product has been assembled, its use speaks for itself.”

All Ikea instruction manuals are made centrally, in an in-house studio in Sweden by designers that are anonymous to the public. The Award is granted to Ikea and the many designers in the company who have worked on the manuals.

Many examples of Ikea instruction manuals are part of Paul Mijksenaar’s instruction archives. The collection was transferred to the department of Special
Collections of the University of Amsterdam.
