Props

By 13-12-2015

The Dutch town of Veenhuizen is home to a large penitentiary equipped with a recreational area that is anonymous and empty. The space remains unused. With ‘Props’ – a modular furniture system in the broadest sense – concept designer Nel Verbeke aims to spark a dialogue between the space and its users.

The inmates can make, choose and arrange these interior elements into new settings. In this way they have the freedom to shape the space into a more humane environment. Three manuals respectively introduce the concept, provide DIY guidelines, and suggest a range of possible combinations.

The prison workshop has equipment available to work with 3 basic materials: wood, concrete and metal. The manuals shows the inmates how to make their own Props in the workshop and how bold, minimalistic shapes can capture moods and emotions.
