Sorry, I am an Image Thinker

By 18-12-2015

Vicky Katrin Kuhlmann: “Our education system is based exclusively on strategies for word-thinkers. My designs are inspired by the ability of dyslexics to process information through images.”

“For children I designed oversized playblocks in the shape of letters, inspired by how dyslexics experience letters in 3D. By playing with them, children engage their whole body memorising the letters as real objects and words as pictures, using visual strategies rather than phonetic ones to process words.”

“Similarly, I designed an alphabet book where for each letter I tried to find a word with a matching sound and shape. Finally, for adults I conceived ‘NIUSpaper’, which transmits information mainly through images.”

“Design allowed me to create tools that transform weaknesses into strengths, inspiring solutions that can benefit not just dyslexics but all members of society.”
