Tingle

By 22-03-2015

Rhys Duindam, industrial and experience designer, presents Tingle. Tingle brings the acoustic touch and feel to the digital music controller.

For digital controllers we tend to use sliders, buttons and dials to tell the computer what to do. However, with an acoustic instrument it is almost as though you are having a ‘conversation’ with the instrument.

Tingle looks like the pin-board toy from your youth, except that the 3D landscape that you create translates into musical sound. With your hands you mould, and form the sound to generate a ‘musical landscape’. The pins in Tingle press back softly against your finger like a piano key.

When enough pins are pressed, the body and pins vibrate with the sound, much like the body of a guitar when you strum it. Lastly, you can warp Tingle’s sound to your will by holding it at different angles for more gestural play.
