Trots op Nederland

By 27-04-2015

Before Geert Wilders there was Rita Verdonk. Like Wilders she was once part of the Liberal Party (VVD) but decided to start her own ‘movement’, Trots op Nederland (Proud of Holland).

And like Wilders’ party, Rita’s Trots op Nederland thrived on the idea that there is something like a true Dutch identity and that this identity is constantly being threatened by ‘the other’. The other being the non-western immigrant and especially the Moroccan immigrant.

During one of her appearances on the Dutch late night show ‘Pauw en Witteman’, Verdonk claimed it should be forbidden for immigrants to speak their own language in the streets. In response I made this one-minute video of Dutch-Moroccan singer Teema who sings our national anthem in Arabic. The video was launched in 2010.
