Typographic Painting

By 02-11-2014

Frans Lieshout paints with letters. He uses his experimental typography to visualize the world of poems.

With a computer pen, he has visualized poems by Jos van Hest and Machteld van Thiel, who in turn have drawn inspiration from paintings by Leo Schatz. To Frans, letters do not only form words but they also have a meaning of themselves. And words are there not only to read, but also to look at, and to experience.

After graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 1981, Frans Lieshout worked as a designer at Total Design in Amsterdam for twelve years. He used to be a teacher of Typography at St. Joost Academy in Breda and the Academy Modern Art in Rotterdam. Since 1999, Frans has been working as a graphic and spatial designer at Cascade Visual Communication in Amsterdam.
