Museum Hilversum presents an exhibition of the photographic work by Viviane Sassen, who has made a name for herself as a fashion photographer, but also conquered the world with her autonomous work. For the first time, the photo series ‘Etan & Me’ and ‘Pikin Slee’ are shown together.
The photo series have been made in the village Pikin Slee in the jungle of Suriname. ‘Pikin Slee’ is about beauty and wonder, about taking a good look at everyday things. ‘Etan & Me’ evaluates the question how well one really knows oneself or one’s loved one.
In Pikin Slee, descendants of runaway slaves live in traditional circumstances. It’s true that the first mobile phones, baseball caps and t-shirts have been spotted, but if someone is not feeling well, it’s the medicine man who comes to the rescue. The inhabitants of the village are familiar with the spirits of yesteryear and are quite satisfied with the situation.
Every day at 14.00 hrs. there is a free guided tour given by a guide from the museum.
