Post-Vlisco

By 19-11-2015

Since 1846, Dutch textile brand Vlisco creates colourful wax printed fabrics that are popular in Central and West Africa. The complex traditional production technique and Vlisco’s high standards result in some fabrics ending up as waste products. After extensive material research, designer Simone Post gave new life to these exceptional leftovers.

Simone: “The Vlisco process of designing and producing wax fabrics is complex and involves more than 20 different steps. There is always a certain amount of fabrics that are rejected. I was determined to do something with this exceptional waste material. All my proposals had to be applicable in an industrial production process. In the end two were selected and further developed. Possible applications are shown in a series of interior products in which the materials have an entirely new look and functionality but still have the specific Vlisco quality.”

Using folding and laser cutting techniques, Simone created patterned cloth space dividers. Other ‘misprints’ were wound into circular rugs or shaped into seat covers. With endless possible colour combinations, a unique product is created every time.
